Moving your OnSong library to Setliner™
Export, import, and what to check afterwards.
For OnSong users who want a native app on Windows, Linux or Android, or who would rather pay once for optional features. OnSong runs on iPad, iPhone and Mac, with a web Console on Premium. It has a free version and Essentials and Premium subscriptions, paid monthly or yearly. Setliner™ is not on iPhone or iPad yet.
Export from OnSong
- In OnSong, open Share > Export. OnSong selects the song or set you are viewing.
- In the Scope menu, choose your whole library, or a set to export only its songs.
- Pick ChordPro as the file format.
- For charts that exist only as PDFs, export those songs again as PDF, with “As a single file” off so each song is its own file.
- Save to Files, Dropbox or Google Drive, somewhere your computer can reach.
- Also make an OnSong Backup and keep it. Setliner™ does not read it, but it restores OnSong if you go back.
Import into Setliner™
- Install Setliner™ and pick the folder your songs will live in.
- In the Library, choose Import and select your exported files. You can select many at once.
- For each PDF, Setliner™ asks whether to keep it as a PDF or convert it to an editable chart.
- If a title is already in your library, Setliner™ asks before replacing it.
- Read the import summary for any file it could not read.
What comes across
- Title, subtitle, artist, copyright, key, capo, tempo and time signature from ChordPro directives.
- Inline chords and section labels, including {start_of_chorus}, {start_of_verse} and similar blocks.
- Comments ({c:}) as performance notes, not as new sections.
- Plain-text charts with chords above the lyrics: title, artist, key and capo from the header lines. Tempo is not read from plain text.
What to check
- Sets do not come across. Setliner™ imports its own set files only. Export OnSong’s Song List (title, artist, key and capo per song) and rebuild each set from it.
- .onsong files. Setliner™’s chooser does not list them. ChordPro export is the tested route.
- Annotations, styles, audio, MIDI and other OnSong settings stay in OnSong.
- Open a few songs with unusual sections and check where each section starts.
Features in OnSong that are not currently in Setliner™
- Backing tracks played inside the app: link songs to Apple Music or Spotify, or import your own. Setliner™ can attach Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or local-file links to a song and opens them in the app you already use.
- MIDI stage automation, with triggers and playback.
- Scenes: motion video backgrounds and DMX stage lighting for songs and sections.
What you get in Setliner™
OnSong also has many of these, such as transposing with a capo, autoscroll, foot pedals, annotations, a metronome and lyrics on a second screen.
- Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with iPad coming.
- Songs are files in a folder you choose, and the free app works offline. Put that folder in a sync service you already use, such as Google Drive or OneDrive, and your devices share one library, with no Setliner™ account needed. Setliner™ has no sync service of its own: sync depends on that service and your platform.
- Back up and restore: Back up library in Settings saves your songs, setlists, marks, tags, play history and settings to one .slnbackup file, and Restore from backup shows what is inside before anything changes. Licenses are not included.
- Bring charts in as ChordPro, plain text or PDF, or paste them in. Change the key or add a capo and every chord follows.
- Tap any chord to see how to play it and hear how it sounds. Draw or write notes on a chart, as you would on paper.
- Build a set for the night with each song’s own key and sequence. The chart can scroll by itself, or a foot pedal turns the page and moves you through the set.
- Between gigs, a chord quiz, ear training and a metronome keep you sharp.
- The free app needs no account, and its core features have no time limit. Optional extras are one-time purchases, each with a 90-day free trial: Chord Builder names the chord for a shape on piano or a 4- to 7-string instrument in any tuning; Linked devices let one device lead others on the same local network, so the page turns on each linked device (each device needs Linked devices: its own trial or purchase, or a team seat); Popout displays send lyrics to extra screens for the singers or the room, or chords to the band, on a computer; Custom Skins, ten included themes plus your own pictures; and Practice, which listens as you play guitar and marks the chords it hears on the chart (it does not scroll or turn pages; Windows, macOS, Linux and Android). Trials and purchases need a verified email and a connection to start, then a check-in at least every 90 days. Purchases are not available to buyers in the EEA or the UK.
- Team bundles (5 or 10 Setliner Pro seats at a bulk price, bought once) include Teams at no extra charge, so a band or worship team can plan events, hand out roles and see who has said yes. The team service stores scheduling, not charts. Setliner Pro and the standard team bundles do not include Practice; bundles with Practice cost more (see Licensing and the prices).
