FAQ

The app, your files, the optional features, and how buying works.

Using Setliner

What is included in the free app?

Everything except the four optional features below: your song library with search, tags and an A–Z index; ChordPro, plain-text and PDF import; export to ChordPro, plain text, PDF, Word and Setliner’s own format; the song editor with version history and song sequences; live transposition, capo and custom tunings; setlists with per-song key, capo and sequence overrides, notes and a set timer; the chart viewer with auto-scroll, fullscreen, Nashville numbers, freehand annotation and Bluetooth foot-pedal control; the three built-in color themes; and the practice tools on desktop (chord quiz, ear training, metronome).

The free core has no time limit and is not a trial.

Which features are paid?

Four, each a one-time unlock: Custom skins and picture emojis ($4.99), the Fretboard Chord Builder ($2.99), Linked devices ($4.99) and Popout displays on desktop ($7.99). Setliner Pro ($14.99) is all four in one license. See the full price list.

Which platforms does it run on?

Android, Windows, macOS and Linux. iOS is developed but not yet released. Check download availability. The apps share one code base, so a song imported or transposed on one platform behaves the same on the others.

Some features are desktop-only for now: popout presentation displays, keyboard shortcuts and Settings search.

Do I need an account?

Not to use the free app: choose a folder and start. Starting a feature trial or activating a purchase needs a verified email address, because that is how a license finds its way to your devices. There is no password; the app sends a sign-in code to your email.

Does Setliner work with my foot pedal?

Any Bluetooth pedal that acts as a keyboard works with no special setup: bind the key it sends to the action you want (next page, next song, auto-scroll, blackout) in Settings. This is part of the free app.

Can the projector show something different from my screen?

Yes, with Popout displays on desktop: open a presentation window on any connected monitor, choose lyrics only or lyrics with chords per window, and use Blackout to blank every display at once while your own screen stays lit.

Your files

Where do my songs and setlists live?

In a folder you choose, as plain files. You control the files and their backups. License checks do not send your songs or setlists anywhere.

Can I use my library on more than one device?

Yes. Put the folder inside a sync service you already use (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and the like) and point each device at it, or move the folder yourself. Setliner does not provide cloud sync of its own; file access and sync depend on your platform and the service you choose.

Does Setliner work offline?

The free app works offline entirely. Starting a trial or activating a purchase needs an internet connection once; after that, an activated feature keeps working offline on a cached license for up to 90 days between successful check-ins. A trial still ends on its original expiry date.

How do I get updates, and which version is supported?

The supported version is always the current one, and every update is free. We fix things in the latest version rather than patching older ones, so if something is wrong, updating is the fix.

On Windows, Setliner checks for a newer version when it starts and tells you when one is ready. Nothing is ever downloaded or installed without you choosing it, and you can turn the check off under Settings, About. On Linux, download the new version from this site. On Android and iPhone or iPad, updates come through the app store as usual.

What formats can I import and export?

Import ChordPro (.cho, .pro, .chopro, .txt), plain-text “chords above lyrics” files, PDF charts (kept as pages or converted into an editable chart), or paste from the clipboard. Export any song or a whole set as ChordPro, plain text, PDF, Word or Setliner’s own lossless format.

What happens to my files if I stop using Setliner?

Nothing. They stay in your folder in the formats they were saved in, and everything can be exported to ChordPro, plain text, PDF or Word at any time.

Optional features

What do Custom skins and emojis include?

Ten picture themes (Ice, Space, Water, Aurora, Forest Mist, Rain on Glass, Desert Dunes, and the three light themes Morning Frost, Rainy Window Daytime and Evergreen Morning), picture or gradient fills on the page, toolbar and bottom bar, skins made from your own photos, and custom picture emojis. The three solid-color themes and every color setting stay free.

What does the Fretboard Chord Builder do?

Click frets on an interactive fretboard and it names the chord you have made, with every valid name and a play button to hear it, in any tuning up to 24 frets. It is also where you build and save your own voicings for a chord in a song.

What are Linked devices?

One device leads other devices on the same local network through a chart or a set: a pedal press, key or swipe on the leader turns the page on every follower. Invite a follower by QR code, nearby discovery or a pasted code. A follower can show a temporary copy of a chart it does not have. The connection is between your devices only and passes through no server of ours.

Will Linked devices be reliable at a gig?

Linked devices use Wi-Fi only, so phone signals in the crowd are not the problem. What causes trouble is the network: venue and guest Wi-Fi is often crowded, and some of it blocks devices from talking to each other, and the 2.4 GHz band fills up in a packed room.

For a gig, bring a small travel router, set it to 5 GHz only, and connect only your band’s devices to it. It does not need an internet connection. If you cannot bring one, a phone hotspot on 5 GHz works too. A follower that briefly loses the connection reconnects on its own. Try it at a rehearsal with the same setup before you rely on it on stage.

What are Popout displays?

Separate chart windows on desktop for each monitor or projector, each with its own lyrics-only or lyrics-and-chords mode, text size, fullscreen and blackout behavior, plus an optional section-sequence banner along the top.

Is Setliner Pro a subscription?

No. Setliner Pro is a one-time purchase of all four optional features on one license. Nothing you buy for the app renews or expires.

Are the prices one-time purchases?

Yes, for the feature unlocks, Setliner Pro and the team bundles. A purchase is yours; the cached license on each device needs an occasional check-in, which is a license check, not another payment. If Setliner ever offers a service with a real ongoing cost to run, such as scheduling for teams, that would be priced separately and said so plainly. View the full price list.

Trials

How do feature trials work?

Each optional feature has its own independent 90-day trial. Verify your email address in the app, start the feature you want to try, and the clock starts for that feature only; trying one does not start the others. The free app is not a trial.

Does a trial ask for payment details?

No. A trial of a one-time unlock simply ends after 90 days and nothing is charged. Buy the feature if you want to keep it.

Can I try a feature on more than one device?

Yes. A trial covers up to four active devices, the same as a bought license.

Does checking in extend my trial?

No. A check-in refreshes the cached license so the feature keeps working offline; the trial still ends on the date it started with.

Buying & refunds

Who sells the purchase, and how do I pay?

Purchases on setliner.com are sold by Polar Software, Inc. (Polar), our merchant of record and reseller. Polar takes your payment, collects any applicable sales tax or VAT and emails your receipt. We never see your card details.

Which countries can buy?

Purchases are not available to buyers in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom; a payment from there is refunded automatically.

How does a purchase reach my app?

Buy with the same email address you verified in the app. The license appears under Licenses and trials in the app’s Settings on every device signed in with that address; activate the feature there.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for website purchases are handled by Polar under its own checkout terms, which apply alongside our End User License Agreement. A refunded or charged-back purchase stops working in the app. Contact us if something went wrong with an order.

Can I buy through an app store instead?

Not today. When Setliner is sold through an app store, that purchase is made under the store’s own terms and refund policy.

Devices & offline use

How many devices does a license cover?

Up to four active devices per license you buy or trial. A seat given to you from someone else’s team bundle covers up to three.

What if I replace a device?

Release the old device under Licenses and trials in Settings and activate the new one. Each seat allows five releases in a rolling 30-day period. A device you release keeps working until the end of the next day, once, so a swap before a service does not catch you out.

Does the app send my songs to your licensing service?

No. A license check carries your account, your devices and the features you hold, never your songs, setlists or annotations.

What if a device is lost or stolen?

Release it from any other device that is signed in, or contact us. Its cached license expires on its own within 90 days.

Teams

Is there a team bundle?

Yes. Setliner Pro comes in five-seat ($49.99) and ten-seat ($89.99) bundles, bought once by the person who runs the team. Every seat includes all four optional features. The owner keeps one seat and hands out the rest in the app to people who join the team with its join code. See team licensing.

How do people join my team?

Share the team’s join code from the app however you like; Setliner sends no email about teams. A person enters the code, you see the request in the app and approve it, with or without a seat. Someone without a seat can still be scheduled; the features unlock once you give them a seat.

Can I take a seat back or move it?

Yes, in the app, without removing the person from the team. Handing out an open seat is always free; moving a seat away from someone who used it counts as a seat change, and a team gets one fewer seat changes than it has seats in any rolling 30 days.

Can I buy more than one bundle?

Yes. Your bundles pool into one set of seats, so a five and a ten make fifteen, and you still keep just one seat for yourself. The pool serves every team you run.

Can someone be on more than one team?

Yes, as a member of any number of teams, and you can run more than one. A seat given to a person covers them on every team of the same owner.

What happens if a bundle is refunded?

That bundle’s seats stop working; the people on them see “No seat” and their devices keep working until the end of the next day. Your teams are frozen only when you have no bundle left: nothing is deleted, and buying a bundle again unfreezes them.

Account & privacy

What does an account store?

Your verified email address, the licenses and trials you hold, and a name for each of your devices if you give one. Nothing about your songs. The details are in the Privacy Policy.

How do I delete my account?

From the app, or by following the steps on the account deletion page. Deleting the account erases its verification state and its device activations and ends your team memberships; it cannot be undone, and your songs are not affected because they were never on the account.

Where are the legal documents?

The End User License Agreement covers every copy of the app, the Privacy Policy describes what the app and our services collect, and organizations that use Teams are covered by the Data Processing Addendum.
