Moving your Set List Maker library to Setliner™
Export, import, and what to check afterwards.
Set List Maker has served gigging musicians since 2010. Its developer now says it is getting no new features and recommends BandHelper; the app still gets bug-fix releases. This guide shows what moves to Setliner™ and what you redo by hand.
Set List Maker’s database export is made for importing back into Set List Maker, and Setliner™ cannot read it. Your charts come across as text, PDF or ChordPro files instead.
Export from Set List Maker
- Back up first: Export Database from the import/export button in the top toolbar.
- Collect your original files. On iOS and Android 10 or later, any PDF, .txt or ChordPro file you attached to songs is kept in Set List Maker’s data folder; on macOS and older Android versions it is in the document folder you chose. Copy those files to your computer.
- For songs typed into the Lyrics field, open the song’s edit page, select all the text in Lyrics and copy it. To keep a copy of a whole set’s songs for reference, select the set list, tap Share Songs and email or print it; Setliner™ would import that as one song.
- For each set list, open the show, tap Share Set List and email it as PDF or copy the plain text. You will rebuild the set from it.
Import into Setliner™
- Install Setliner™ and choose a folder for your library.
- In the Library, choose Import and select your files. You can select many at once. Setliner™ reads ChordPro (.cho, .pro, .chopro), plain text (.txt) and PDF.
- For each PDF, choose to keep it as pages or convert it into an editable chart.
- For text you copied from the Lyrics field, choose Paste from clipboard, then check the title before saving.
- Rebuild each set list in Setliner™’s setlist builder, using the list you shared in export step 4.
What comes across, and what to check
- Chords in square brackets, such as [G], are read as ChordPro chords.
- Chords typed on their own line above the lyrics are read by column. Check the alignment.
- Title, artist, key and capo come across from ChordPro directives, or from a plain-text header like “Key: G” and “Capo 2”.
- Setliner™ may read a section label in square brackets, like [Verse], as a chord. Check section labels after import.
- One file is one song. A PDF holding several songs imports as one song.
- These Set List Maker items do not come across: set lists, tempo typed into Set List Maker’s Tempo field, notes, custom fields, recordings, MIDI presets, automation tracks and layouts.
Features in Set List Maker that are not currently in Setliner™
- MIDI: it can send program changes to sound and lighting gear from song to song. Setliner™ does not.
- Audio played inside the app: reference recordings with slow-down and pitch shift, backing tracks and click tracks, and automation tracks. Setliner™ has a metronome and can attach links to recordings, but does not play, slow down or pitch-shift those recordings itself.
What you get in Setliner™
Set List Maker also has some of these, such as transposing, auto-scroll and remote control.
- Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with iPad coming.
- Songs are files in a folder you choose, and the free app works offline. Put that folder in a sync service you already use, such as Google Drive or OneDrive, and your devices share one library, with no Setliner™ account needed. Setliner™ has no sync service of its own: sync depends on that service and your platform.
- Back up and restore: Back up library in Settings saves your songs, setlists, marks, tags, play history and settings to one .slnbackup file, and Restore from backup shows what is inside before anything changes. Licenses are not included.
- Bring charts in as ChordPro, plain text or PDF, or paste them in. Change the key or add a capo and every chord follows.
- Tap any chord to see how to play it and hear how it sounds. Draw or write notes on a chart, as you would on paper.
- Build a set for the night with each song’s own key and sequence. The chart can scroll by itself, or a foot pedal turns the page and moves you through the set.
- Between gigs, a chord quiz, ear training and a metronome keep you sharp.
- The free app needs no account, and its core features have no time limit. Optional extras are one-time purchases, each with a 90-day free trial: Chord Builder names the chord for a shape on piano or a 4- to 7-string instrument in any tuning; Linked devices let one device lead others on the same local network, so the page turns on each linked device (each device needs Linked devices: its own trial or purchase, or a team seat); Popout displays send lyrics to extra screens for the singers or the room, or chords to the band, on a computer; Custom Skins, ten included themes plus your own pictures; and Practice, which listens as you play guitar and marks the chords it hears on the chart (it does not scroll or turn pages; Windows, macOS, Linux and Android). Trials and purchases need a verified email and a connection to start, then a check-in at least every 90 days. Purchases are not available to buyers in the EEA or the UK.
- Team bundles (5 or 10 Setliner Pro seats at a bulk price, bought once) include Teams at no extra charge, so a band or worship team can plan events, hand out roles and see who has said yes. The team service stores scheduling, not charts. Setliner Pro and the standard team bundles do not include Practice; bundles with Practice cost more (see Licensing and the prices).
